Job description
ALS Life Sciences Portugal is looking for a highly motivated and qualified candidate capable of joining an organisation to carry out applied research activities to create new technologies and new processes and products.
The candidate will be part of the SmartGnostcs project, aiming to develop innovative point of care (POC) devices combined with the acquisition and processing of data through Machine Learning/Artificial Intelligence (AI) associated with the control and monitoring ofantimicrobial resistance.
Main responsibilities
Provide technical support to companies and public or private organizations, assisting them in the introduction of biotechnological strategies, methods and processes, as well as in the orientation and implementation of industrial research and development, aimed at the pathological detection and monitoring of bacteria and the monitoring of antimicrobial resistance.
NGS techniques (whole bacterial genome sequencing; Metagenomics and 16S) that accelerate the development of new point-of-care (POC) devices for detecting pathogenic bacteria and monitoring antimicrobial resistance.
Perfecting NGS strategies and methodologies for characterizing multidrug-resistant bacterial strains.
The activities carried out in accordance with GLP requirements.
Out all activities in accordance with established procedures and training programs.
In/lead continuous improvement activities.
With all procedures, methods, and other regulatory commitments.
Qualifications and Requirements
Degree or PhD in Biological Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biology, Genetics or related field, with more than 3 years' relevant experience in molecular biology or microbial genetics research.
Experience in next-generation sequencing (NGS) techniques and data analysis.
Background in analyzing interactions between humans and microorganisms, especially antimicrobial resistance.
Not only to learn new techniques, but also to teach/supervise BSc researchers/students.
Independent, but also able to work as a member of a multidisciplinary, project-orientated team, with demonstrated problem-solving skills and flexibility.
Written and spoken English (Portuguese is beneficial).
The ideal candidate should demonstrate in-depth knowledge in molecular biology, with experience in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), including library preparation and data analysis, having in particular:
Extracting nucleic acids from isolates and samples using various manual and automated methods.
Molecular biology techniques, not limited to cloning, real-time PCR, primer design and sequence analysis (Sanger, next generation sequencing - NGS).
Experience in preparing libraries and analyzing NGS data (Whole Genome Sequencing; Metagenomics, 16S).
Up-to-date knowledge of laboratory processes and automation to include quantitative and qualitative molecular biology methodologies and optimize process efficiency.
